I heard a snippet of news our local MyTV station plays inbetween shows called the washington news minute. Today the anchor spoke about how funds were misappropriated in Iraq... Surely, I'm certain everyone was as aghast as I was... Funds misappropriation? NOOOO! Why wouldn't an olympic sized pool be a necessity in the desert? I could go on at length about some of these details, but I really would rather not develop an ulcer today.
Wouldn't it be nice, shouldn't it be required that all of those FRICKEN parties involved be forced to repay these misappropriations from their very own money? I think so. Wouldn't be even better if all items paid for with our expenditures had to be approved by us? Seems fair. I'm held accountable for money I'd borrow to use with a specific purpose.
Rangel Says He Will Revive Legislation to Impose Military Draft
I believe it's convenient to say this in hindsight, but I don't believe this statement to be true. It may have made things uglier, but we still would have gotten into this war. It wouldn't have changed a single thing. People, soldiers, and congressmen who now oppose the course of things past and to come wouldn't have thought any differently. There would have been unrest here, those drafted either rebelling, refusing, or defecting... But I really can't see the course we took as having changed significantly enough to have avoiding this situation we're in."There's no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm's way,''
One of the reasons I think this way is, that despite the lack of evidence of WMDs and other reasons we invaded and now occupy. Despite the death tolls, and witnessing those who've come back after fighting to broken lives, there exists those out there that still faithfully support bush and the war and even they can't quite put a finger on why we're there, for how long, and what's to come. They think patriotism is complete and unwavering support and anything less -- even slight questioning and objections -- is unpatriotic and is a insult to our loved ones over seas. Simply stated, draft or not, they'd support us invading a broom closet in the name of patriotism. In claiming any who oppose our elected leader is unpatriotic, they obviously and conveniently forget how we've come to be an independent nation. We questioned those who ruled over us, we resisted their attempts to subdue us, and we banned together to bring about change in our best interests. If we had the mindset of not questioning the powers that be, none of what we've come to know as our America would stand today. At least, that's my possibly flawed and abridged interpretation.
I've gone out of my way avoiding a post like this because I've been through it so much and it bothers me. The blind faith, the name calling, the caterwauling, and propositions like this which would have even called for greater sacrifices than the ones we've already made. Using a draft system as a means to prevent war is like forsaking modern medical science to fix a wound and amputating the limp instead (I can't quite remember the saying). Taking away a persons right to abstain from service is another freedom being placed on the chopping block for what? A means around other politicians being more proactive, acting in our interests and investigating questionable truths for themselves and the people who've elected them right? Well, wake up and smell the tide of change Charles, it can just as easily turn right back on you.
