QotD: They Play My Jams
What's your favorite radio station, past or present?
I loved Syracuse University's Z89.1 years ago. They played modern rock, alternative, and whatever the hell else they pleased. Then it went RnB and rap and I lost interest. Then Krock came and kind of picked up the torch, they had a great "screw the system" attitude where music was uncensored and the jocks were unpredictable, but not out of control. Sometimes I turn it on still.
I'm not a fan of AM/FM locally, quite frankly, it sucks. Like Television stations, it's all about money. I hate clearwater and how it's sterilized the nation's airwaves and took any bit of unique identity away from what you might hear if all stations were independently owned and operated. In fact, I was watching TV the otherday and a station advertised that they were seeking an accountant to be the GM (general manager) of their station. To me, it's like taking a barista from starbucks and making them the top chef in a five star restaurant. No offense, but ... is this position to be filled by someone concerned with entertaining, informing, and ratings or with someone who wants to squeeze another 30-minute infomercial in profitable spots? Better yet, perhaps they can invest in newer video compression technology so they can fit an extra five commercials here and there?! Yeah, I'm bitter about it. I used to work in television and it turned what used to be a career into a part-time, underpaying joke. The station I used to work at just fired all of the part timers and is now investing in machinery to automate the station... This means all the people who've worked there for the past 5-25+ years are soon to be out of a job! No more middlemen, less people to pay, more money and income for the station (actually, for the parent company which isn't even in this state) -- but will that translate to less commercials and better programming? ROFL! Don't fool yourself...
