QotD: Should Have Been Mine
Girl, boy, game you should have won, job you should have gotten…tell us about one that got away.

This question makes me want to curl up in a fetal position and sob. Dicey semantics much?
Let me say that I work pretty much as a digital proof checker. I read around 200 entries a shift, checking that certain requirements are met and they nothing shifty is released. When the shift is over... I reboot my brain! I expunge the acronyms, poor grammar, and entries completely bereft of cogent pitches and I go home. Having first read this and thinking "what the fuck?" and having rebooted my brain has endangered a good Friday. I don't want to HAVE to parse your dicey semantics... By all means, if the QOTD is going to be long, with an attempt to be profound, by all means make it long and profound. (although this seems like an aggregate of other QOTDs, please forgive if I err in that assumption).
I was up for a Jr. Web Admin position at a well known company here in the NE. I had the background, I had the skills, I had kicked ass during the interview. I was engaging, I asked good questions, I proved everything I wanted to. I knew that by all intents and purposes, from what I was told by the guys that interviewed me AND the head hunter -- repeatedly, that I had made the decision a difficult one.
Now, time to deal with my crappy semantics.
I should have gotten the jr. net admin last year. That should have been mine by all rights. Hiring someone from a different department from within the company was such a douche bag thing to do.... Especially if I was more adventurous, inventive, and bold than all of your other candidates -- I interviewed in such a way that should have showed that I had ambition and that I lacked inhibition to take on anything you threw at me... Learn new languages? Cool. Assume your old responsibilities? No problem! Burn my candle at both ends and be at everyone's beck and call? Here's my cell phone number! But I suppose it was cheaper to hire the newbie without the degree or experience, right? Give your little buddy from within a boost into a field where he was just learning f**cking html, right? Well all I can say is that i hope that venture pays off for you as well as I believe it should have. *grin* Enjoy living the the bed you've made.
I don't mean to sound sour but that burned me. I tried to take it, but it just did NOT sit well. I've gone to many interviews and I have been up against some stiff competition that, by all rights, when I lost -- it didn't hurt. I'm not a sore loser when the game is fair but this really wasn't. Entry level or not...
So far as unrequited love? Fuck that shit. Fuck looking back. Fuck the one that got away. Fuck 'em all!* I'm about who doesn't want to get away. Who wants to be with me. Who won't look back. Life is too short to dwell on those who lost out!
Games? A game is a game and if you didn't walk away having enjoyed it... You're doing it wrong. Admittedly, some refs are legally blind assholes, but still. Have fun.
*- Part of a famous family quote my grandfather left us with many moons ago. He said "fuck 'em all!" and one of his friends said "what about the pallbearers?" he replied "fuck them too!" My grandfather was considered the sweetest man anyone ever met... The outburst was really out of the blue and pretty funny considering what kind of person he was.
